I. Position Title
Media Specialist for District 77

II. Organizational Relationship
The media specialist is responsible to the Director of Media Services and the building principal

III. Primary Functions
A. To instruct students in the location, use and choice of appropriate materials, both print and non print
B. To aid teachers/staff in the location and choice of materials, both print and non print, suitable for curriculum
C. To select materials which meet curriculum needs, provide enjoyment and promote leisure activities that are age appropriate
D. Establish media center policies and review them periodically, making adjustments when needed
E. Manage the media center as a flexible, multi-tasked learning environment

IV. Responsibilities
A. Instructional Leadership
1. Teach media skills as needed, including forming questions to aid in research, choosing appropriate resources, teaching computer applications
2. Supplement and reinforce appropriate media skills
3. Teach responsible behavior in the care and return of materials
4. Teach responsible behavior in the use of technology
5. Teach additional or supplemental lessons to small groups and individuals when appropriate and time permits
6. Assist students in locating materials appropriate to their reading and interest levels
7. Schedule research classes and small groups into the media center, supervise research and assist in behavior management
8. Provide a pleasant atmosphere conducive to reading and study
9. Be consistent in supervising students and their behavior
10. Attend district meetings and workshops as are scheduled
B. Collection Development and Maintenance
1. Select and order materials appropriate for the grade level and curriculum of the building which meet the criteria of the selection policy, but also provide materials for students who function above and below grade level
2. Eliminate materials which are outdated, worn or no longer used
3. Maintain a comprehensive consideration file to be used in ordering materials
4. Utilize cataloging skills in maintaining an updated card catalog and in preparing materials for processing
5. Establish and update on-line circulation systems
6. Take a yearly inventory to determine the status of the collection
7. Participate in the planning and development of changes in the physical facilities and in the opening and closing of the media center

C. Staff Relationships
1. Consult with staff members when selecting materials
2. Alert staff members to new materials they might utilize
3. Provide bibliographies upon request
4. Direct and support staff in the day-to-day operation of the media center
5. Provide input into the selection of support staff
6. Monitor and insure adherence to the copyright laws of the US in the utilization of the collection

D. Student / Teacher / Parent Relationships
1. Monitor return of materials by providing a minimum of six (6) overdue lists per school year
2. At least two (2) times a year, communicate with parents via the school newsletter,
develop bulletins, newsletters, brochures and announcements directed toward faculty, staff, students and external audiences which promote the media center program
3. Manage and develop special activities to promote the program of the media center
4. Provide space within the media center, and cooperate to faculty wishing to use the media center as an exhibit space for student work and for class research projects

E. Personal
1. Be aware of trends via membership in professional organizations, attending professional workshops and meetings and reading professional journals

F. Budget
1. Develop the media center budget with consideration for current and future resource needs in all areas with available budget
2. Manage a program budget that balances print and non print materials
3. Manage purchasing, receipts, and records to monitor budget expenditures against budget
4. Maintain records of equipment repair expenses for long-range planning for replacement

G. Supervision
1. Assess the qualifications of candidates for open positions and hire employees to perform functions which help the media center attain objectives
2. Evaluate employee performance as is necessary
3. Supervise all selection, acquisition, technical services and users services
4. Monitor the work area to insure it is a safe and healthy workplace for employees
5. Monitor the work load of each employee to insure optimum working and work load environment

H. Curriculum Development
1. Team with teachers to identify appropriate information resources and learning strategies to help students reach defined learning objectives
2. Team with teachers to design instruction which incorporates information resources and approaches needed to achieve outcomes
3. Teach the skills of information location, access, evaluation, use and communication as they relate to the program of instruction to both students and teachers
4. Assist in the evaluation of student achievement of information outcomes

V. Employment Qualfications
A. Education
1. Active MN state teaching certificate
2. Major or minor in Instructional Media and Technology or Library Media Education
3. State media certification
B. Experience
1. Understanding of and experience in managing a network
2. Working knowledge of interactive TV
3. Ability to manage the troubleshooting of technical problems
